A lump-sum payment made by a publisher or label to a songwriter, composer, or recording artist, recoupable against the creator’s future royalties. The advance provides immediate cash flow but must be “earned back” before additional royalties are paid through to the artist.
Unless the artist or producer breaches the contract, the advance is typically not refundable.
